The Owner/Operator is responsible for driving a large tractor-trailer with safety as the first priority.  Drivers must remain seated in the driver’s seat for extended periods of time.  Vehicle inspections require the Driver to walk, stoop and bend at the knees. (See physical abilities test requirements). Drivers must work a flexible schedule and serve as the company representative when delivering loads and interacting with customers. All drivers are expected to treat customers with courtesy and respect at all times.  Drivers interact with other Drivers on a minimal basis

Main Job Tasks

  • Operates vehicle in a manner that shows safety is a priority
  • Drives defensively at all times to avoid accidents
  • Visually and manually inspects the inside and outside of the vehicle
  • Follows a structured checklist to document condition of the vehicle
  • Documents improperly working items or damage to the vehicle
  • Loads and unloads freight according to customer and freight handling specifications
  • Secures cargo for transport
  • Checks and protects freight during transport
  • Maneuvers truck into loading or unloading positions, and checks that vehicle loading and unloading equipment is properly positioned
  • Interacts with customers in a pleasant and friendly manner
  • Responds to customer complaints and issues in a calm and professional manner
  • Obtains receipts or signatures when required
  • Checks and documents condition of vehicle at completion of transport
  • Documents all mileage and service hours to abide by D.O.T. log regulations
  • Describes vehicle condition to Maintenance personnel when repairs are needed
  • Uses PeopleNet to communicate with Dispatch
  • Completes all other daily responsibilities of a driving professional
  • Attends safety meetings and training programs to remain up-to-date on safety policies and procedures, and ensure that reoccurring training is complete as required.

Work Performance

To meet excellent performance standards, Drivers must report to work on time and deliver loads according to schedule.  Drivers must maintain an excellent safety record with no preventable accidents.  Drivers are expected to interact with customers in a pleasant manner, and to remain calm and professional in all situations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license in the state he/she resides
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • HAZMAT and Tanker Endorsements
  • Active TWIC Card
  • Acceptable driving record meeting company hiring standards, verified through a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • 2 years of driving experience
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to pass a pre-hire driving test
  • Ability to pass a D.O.T. level physical and drug/alcohol test
  • Ability to pass physical abilities test
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, rules and regulations
  • Customer-service oriented
  • Demonstrates characteristics of a team player
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Neat, clean personal appearance

Truck Specifications

  • 2010 or newer preferably
  • Truck must be inspected by Puryear Tank Lines shop before being placed in service
  • All lettering will be done by Puryear Tank Lines shop personnel
