Position Overview
The Heavy Rescue Tow Truck Operator is responsible for operating heavy-duty tow trucks, wreckers, and rotators to recover and transport large vehicles, including tractor-trailers, buses, heavy equipment, and accident-damaged commercial vehicles. This role requires advanced driving skills, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to safely handle complex recoveries in high-pressure and emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty tow trucks, wreckers, and recovery equipment in compliance with
- company policies and DOT regulations.
- Respond to accident scenes, breakdowns, and emergency calls promptly and
- professionally.
- Perform heavy recoveries, winching, rollovers, load shifts, and load transfers safely and
- efficiently.
- Assess accident scenes and determine the safest and most effective recovery strategy.
- Secure, transport, and deliver vehicles and equipment to designated locations.
- Maintain proper documentation for all service calls, including work orders, mileage, and
- time records.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of tow trucks and equipment.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs and routine maintenance as needed.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, customers, law enforcement, and roadside
- assistance providers.
- Uphold the highest safety standards and follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety protocols.
Qualifications
Required:
- Valid CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement.
- Clean driving record and ability to pass DOT physical and drug screening.
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating heavy-duty wreckers or similar equipment.
- Knowledge of heavy recovery techniques, rigging, and load securement.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
Preferred:
- WreckMaster or TRAA certification.
- Experience with rotator operations.
- Basic mechanical and welding skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 75+ lbs and work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as needed.
